Now You Know...

So what's all this talk of kissing the Blarney Stone?

Blarney Castle is located in County Cork, Ireland. Built in 1446,  the Blarney stone is located in the southern tower wall between the main castle wall and the parapet. In order to kiss the stone one has to lie on their back and bend backward (and downward), holding iron bars for support. It is said that the Blarney stone has magical properties. As legend has it an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly. (So that's what our politicians do!)

Pampering

As we look forward to the rejuvenating qualities of Spring, we should also remember to pamper ourselves.  Our New Year's resolutions for eating healthier and exercising more should be paying off by now - so why not reward yourself with some 'pampering'. For the ladies - a new hair style, pretty nails, that brightly colored blouse.  For the men - new grips for your golf clubs, those new fishing lures that can catch anything, or something flashier like a convertible.  For the kids - a weekend at an indoor water park.  There are two open in Sandusky, with a third opening in late spring.  Pamper your clothes, too.  Bring in your sweaters and cold weather coats for a cleaning.  Unfortunately, no matter what Punxsutawney Phil says, we're bound to have more snow and cold weather.

We need to pamper ourselves once in a while because we deserve the best.

Ask the Experts

Q. My daughter bought a formal gown for a school dance. A  friend wants to wear it to another formal, but it has dirt on the bottom and salad oil on the skirt and needs to be cleaned first.  But the label says "Do not wash. Do not dry clean."  What am I supposed to do?

A.  There are garments that a manufacturer wants to market that cannot be safely cleaned by any method due to the type of trims, painted, glued-on, or flocked designs, or other components.  According to the Federal Trade Commission's Care Label Rule, if the product cannot be cleaned by any available cleaning method without being harmed, the label must state "Do Not Wash. Do Not Dry Clean", or other wording that will let the consumer know the item cannot be successfully cleaned.  Since your daughter's dress bears that label, unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done.  Garments with a label stating such rigid restrictions are considered to be one-time wear garments.  But if a lesson can be learned to avoid future problems - PLEASE - read all labels before you buy!

And Before I Close.....

This is an internet story sent to me last week.  It is thought provoking:

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 2 oz to 12 oz.

The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it."

"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an
hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day,
you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on.  As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."

"So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can."

"Relax; pick them up later after you've rested.
Life is short.
Enjoy it! "
