Feature – Focus on Holiday Happenings

Holidays - the best or worst of times?  Charles Dickens' words make us think - storybook holidays are not to be expected.  Keep the following thoughts in mind:

1. Be realistic.  Keep family gatherings to a size and length you can manage.

2. Do what you think is best for your family, not what others think you should be doing.

3. Set limits. Excessive spending, eating, drinking and party going can leave you stressed and worn out.

4. Avoid emotionally negative experiences.  Surround yourself with people who care.

5. Start some new traditions of your own.

6. Acknowledge your feelings.  Sometimes, holidays are painful.

7. Give something of yourself to someone outside your family.  Holidays are an excellent time to express your love and concern for others.

Ask the Experts

Q. How can we lower our heating bills this winter?

A.  Since we're not experts in this area, we did some reading and researching.  While you can't control the price of heating, you can reduce how much you use.  Here's a few tips: have your duct system cleaned and tested for air leaks...close your fireplace damper when not in use...replace your furnace air filter...have your heating system cleaned and tuned...install a programmable set-back thermostat - turn down your thermostat 8 degrees for 8 hours a day and you'll save 8 percent on home heating costs...consider replacing your old furnace or heat pump. If your system is more than 12 years old it probably wastes 35 percent of your heating costs.   We've listed some links in the left column for your review.  Hope this helps!
