Feature – Focus on 'College Laundry'

overflowing laundry basket

Remember when we used to take pictures of our children getting on the school bus?  Now some of us are sending them off to college - to fend for themselves and all the associated 'problems'.  We've tried to give them insights so they will think before they act. "Eat healthy", "Review nightly", "Get enough sleep", "You have enough socks and underwear to last you 3 weeks before you have to do laundry".  So now it's time for laundry, and as always, the World Wide Web is there to help.  I've listed some links to websites devoted to laundry in the left margin. The Basics?  Sort, check pockets, read labels, don't overload.  And what do all those funny-looking symbols mean on that new shirt?  Look on the Fabric Care Chart for an explanation.  And if all else fails, just call home.

Ask the Experts

Q.  We were in a game of mud football at the dorm.  How can I remove the mud stains?

A.   Let the mud dry, then brush off as much as possible using a soft bristle brush, such as an old toothbrush.  Wash as usual using regular laundry detergent. Most mud stains can be removed by washing the item according to the care instructions. For those more difficult mud stains, try treating the stain using one of the many pretreatment products on the market.  Remember to test for  colorfastness before using any stain removal agent.  To test for colorfastness, apply a small amount of the product to an unexposed area of the garment.  Let stand for about five minutes, then rinse.  If the color is affected, don't use the product.  Also check the label on your laundry detergent, as many give step-by-step pretreatment instructions.

And Before I Close.....

Here's some inspiring thoughts as we send our family to school/new careers/marriage or just 'out' in the world:

     Teach by example.

The best way to see the future is to create it.

While most are dreaming of success, winners wake up and work hard to achieve it.

Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.

Many people have gone further than they could because somebody else thought they could.

Until you spread your wings, you'll have no idea how far you can fly.
