Focus on Fall 'Clean' Up

With summer ended and autumn beginning, it's time to put those summer outfits in storage and pull out those fall fashion staples in your wardrobe. As you begin this clothing makeover, consider the following time-old tips:

bullet

Clean or dryclean everything before storing. Stains will set if left untreated and can attract insects.

bullet

Store garments in a well-ventilated area. Avoid attics, basements, and exposure to natural or artificial light. Items should never be stored while damp. Mildew is likely to grow on cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen, and ramie.

bullet

Never store clothes in plastic bags - wrap them in cotton sheets.

bullet

When pulling out your winter clothes, look for small holes or broken fibers from insects or mildew damage.

bullet

Inspect furs for tears, rips or damage.

bullet

Avoid keeping furs in a crowded closet or exposing them to excessive heat, especially when wet.

bullet

Allow velvet garments to hang freely. Velvet can crush easily.

bullet

Hang garments on padded hangers to prevent creasing and distortion.

Ask the Experts

Q. I know you're not experts on everything, but I moved from the West Coast to the Cleveland area recently, and heard about an October holiday called "Sweetest Day'.  What the heck is that?

A.  Welcome to the NORTH Coast!  Here in the Great Lakes Region, we celebrate "Sweetest Day" on the third Saturday of October.  According to various internet searches, the holiday began in 1922 by a regular citizen, Herbert Birch Kinston, (who may have worked in the candy industry), who wanted to do something nice for the city's less fortunate residents. He gathered up pounds of chocolates and, with the aid of film stars Theda Bara and Ann Pennington, delivered boxes of candy to Cleveland area newsboys, orphanages, and hospitals.  Today, the original 'Sweetest Day of the Year' has evolved into a romantic holiday, similar to Valentine's Day.
We understand, as greater Clevelanders move to other areas of the country, they take this tradition with them.

Relaxing Holidays

And Before I Close.....

As promised, here's a fall recipe:

Pumpkin RollPumpkin Roll

3 eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup canned pumpkin
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup flour
1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Mix eggs and granulated sugar together, then mix in pumpkin, soda, cinnamon and flour until thoroughly combined. Cover a large cookie sheet with waxed paper, then coat the waxed paper with vegetable shortening. Pour batter on prepared cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove warm cake from cookie sheet, placing cake on a dishtowel that is covered with powdered sugar. Roll up and set aside to cool. Make filling by mixing cream cheese, butter, 1 cup powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
Carefully unwrap and unroll pumpkin roll. Spread filling over unrolled cake, then roll up like a jelly roll. To store, wrap in plastic wrap and then in foil, refrigerate.
