Focus on Relaxing Holidays

Relaxing Holidays - that sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it?  In our family, the Thanksgiving Holiday means dinner at our home for the parents, in-laws, kids and some close family friends.  Over the years, we've fine-tuned the menu, but we still try one new dish and then vote whether to keep it for the next year.  Each invitee is responsible for one thing - either an assigned 'chore' or 'dish'.  So the silver gets polished, the table set with the good plates, and the veggie dip made by someone other than me.  Table decorations are provided by the youngest members - turkey cutouts, crayon colored fall leaves, paper mache cornucopias.

After clean-up, after football, after the goodbyes, I make notes about anything I'll do differently for next year and give 'Thanksgiving'  for another (semi) relaxing holiday.  See the 'Links' section for other helpful hints.

Ask the Experts

Q. I went camping for the last time of the season.  How can I clean my sleeping bag so it will be ready for more trips next spring?

A. Sleeping bags sometimes can be tricky to wash.  Many sleeping bags contain down or fiber filling, which always makes the cleaning process a little more interesting.  Make sure to check the care instructions before cleaning if you have any doubt as to whether or not it can be washed. Sleeping bags should be washed separately on a gentle cycle. Add detergent to the washer and partially fill with warm water. Submerge the sleeping bag in the water to expel air, then allow the washer to finish filling. Periodically stop the washer, open the lid, and press air form the sleeping bag to help ensure good cleaning. Tumble dry at regular temperatures. You may try adding a clean tennis ball to the dryer to fluff up the filling. If you find the sleeping bag is too bulky for a home washing machine, you can bring it to us for professional cleaning.

And Before I Close.....

We're relating the following as a public service:

Ohio became one of the first states to make a 'next of kin' registration process available. Any holder of a valid Ohio driver license, commercial driver license, temporary permit or state of Ohio identification card will now have the option of providing the name and information of a contact person they wish to be notified in the event the individual is involved in a crash or emergency and is otherwise unable to communicate with the contact person.

Ohioans can now provide next of kin information for up to two contacts online or through any BMV deputy registrar. For those over the age of 18, the contact person can be a nearby relative, friend or co-worker. Those under the age of 18 are required to provide a parent or guardian for the primary contact. This secure database will only be accessible to BMV employees and law enforcement officials.

For more information on the Next of Kin registration process, log onto the BMV Web site at www.bmv.ohio.gov.
