Stack of Casual ShirtsSummertime, and the livin' is easy... Focus on Summer Fun

We live in such a great area with so many natural and man-made resources - our Lake, area beaches, a world-renowned amusement park, museums, professional sports teams, etc.  Try a sunrise walk through Crocker Park where you can admire all the plants and flowers before the shops open, an afternoon picnic in the Valley, or a moonlit walk at Huntington Beach and sitting on the rocks watching the waves come in.  ENJOY the warmth, sunshine, and even the summer rain.

Ask the Experts

Q. How do I avoid moth damage when storing my winter woolies??

 A.  Moth damage is a concern storing winter clothes through the summer.  The following is a composite of information gathered from research by the International Fabricare Institute, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and Cornell University.

Clothes moth larvae feed on wool, feathers, fur, hair, leather, lint, dust, paper and occasionally cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibers.  Moths are destructive during the larvae stage.   Adult moths are entirely harmless to clothing.  When laying eggs, the adult moth is attracted to garments stained with beverages, urine, oil from hair, and perspiration.  The females will lay 40 to 50 eggs that hatch in 4 to 21 days.  Once hatched, the larvae feed on the fabrics.

Management to protect clothing against damage by clothes moths is done in several steps:

̃     Conduct regular inspections, at least once a year.  Take all items out of closets and drawers, and vacuum thoroughly.

̃     Clean garment thoroughly before storage.

̃    Cedar-lined chests and closets are not 100% effective.  Mothballs or naphthalene flakes should be used with caution.  They are toxins and can be absorbed into the body when vapors are inhaled, especially over prolonged periods of time.

̃    Store articles properly. Place clean articles in tight storage containers.  Plastic bags sealed, after the cleaned item is placed inside, should prevent moth infestation as long as the bag remains without tears.

The best method for preventing insect damage is to frequently inspect, and clean rooms, closets and storage containers.  Wash and dry clean garments regularly and always clean just before any prolonged storage.  If possible, store items in tight containers or sealed garment bags.  In order for any insect protection to be truly effective, the storage container must be tight so that insects cannot get in.
