Feature Focus on Ties

"Besides being useful against colds, stiff necks and tooth aches, a necktie enables one to know more about the person who is wearing it", said Emil De L'Empese in 1818.  Neckties have been around through all the ages - starting off as a kerchief, and gradually becoming an integral part of what a man wears.  Even in western times, men had the bolo tie.  The 'cravat' began in Croatia - it is said that a soldier going off to war tied a colorful scarf from his beloved.  Ties were made in America starting in the twentieth century - before that, they were imported from Europe.

With the advent of 'casual business attire' in the 1990's, ties seemed to be replaced by sportshirts.  We appear to be coming back to ties now - with a 'Dressed to the Nines' attitude.  After all, first impressions count!  So let us help you make that good impression - cleaning ties is one of our specialties! In fact, just bring in this newsletter with your ties, and receive $1.00 off the price of cleaning the tie.  Offer good for the month of January, 2007.

Ask the Expertsman's tie

Q. I have a necktie that became distorted after cleaning.  What happened?

A. Because of their construction, ties can sometimes become distorted during wear and cleaning.  When distortion occurs, it appears as a rippling or puckering of the outer fabric.  Tie distortion is due mainly to the method of construction.  In order to form the irregular shape of the tie, the outer fabric is cut on a bias.  Bias-cut fabrics are susceptible to stretching from flexing tension and stress during use.  Furthermore, many interlining materials used in ties are not completely stabilized and can shrink during cleaning.
