Focus on National Inventors Month

How was 'dry cleaning' invented?  This is taken from the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute website:

Drycleaning dates back to ancient times, probably beginning with the advent of textile clothing itself. The ruins of Pompeii gives a record of a highly developed trade of *fullers* who were professional clothes cleaners. Lye and ammonia were used in early laundering, and a type of clay known as *fuller*s earth* was used to absorb soils and grease from clothing too delicate for laundering.
There are many stories about the origin of drycleaning, all centering on a surprise discovery when a petroleum-type fluid was accidentally spilled on a greasy fabric. It quickly evaporated and the stains were miraculously removed. The firm of Jolly-Belin, opening in Paris in the 1840s, is credited as the first drycleaning firm.

Ask the Experts

Q. I've been helping my summer 'glow' with self-tanning lotion. My tan looks great, but it's staining my clothes.  Help!

A.  Before applying the lotion, be sure to read the instructions carefully.  Wash your hands immediately after you finish and allow your skin a substantial amount of time to dry before you get dressed.  These stains can be  very difficult to remove.  If the product gets on your clothes, wash them as soon as possible in the hottest water temperature safe for colors.  If traces remain on lighter fabrics after washing, try re-washing with mild bleach, or take them to us, your professional dry cleaner for stain removal.
